The Outstanding Sustained Contribution Award is presented each year to an individual whose participation with the Colorado Lawyers Committee over many years has significantly and positively promoted its mission, making an important difference in the lives of children and the underprivileged. This year’s recipient is Nancy Elkind of the law firm Palmer Polaski.

Nancy received her B.A. in Political Science from Douglass College, Rutgers, The State University and her M.A. in Political Science from the University of Wisconsin, Madison. She earned her law degree from the University of Denver College of Law in 1979. She started her legal career at the firm of Arkin, McGloin & Davenport and joined the Law Offices of Ann Allott, an immigration law firm, in 1982. She was a founding partner of Stern & Elkind in 1985 and, in 2010, founded her current firm, Palmer Polaski. Since 1982, Nancy has limited her practice exclusively to immigration law.

Throughout her career, Nancy has demonstrated an extraordinary commitment to the work and mission of the Colorado Lawyers Committee. Nancy has been an active participant in the leadership of the Lawyers Committee for more than 25 years. She has served on the Board of Directors, without interruption, since 1990. For two years in the early 1990’s she was a member of the Executive Committee. In 2008, she rejoined the Executive Committee where she has been an active participant for the last eight years. In 2009 she was elected as Secretary/Treasurer, a position she held for two years. From 2011 to 2013 she served as Board Chair for the Colorado Lawyers Committee and presided over a busy and impactful time. She was also responsible for the significant expansion of the Chair’s Roundtable, our major individual donor program; her efforts have raised over $150,000 for the Lawyers Committee.

Nancy has been unselfish in contributing her considerable immigration expertise to the Colorado Lawyers Committee for more than 25 years. She has been an active member of the Immigration Task Force since 1991 and chaired the task force for almost 10 years. She is our resident expert on anything immigration. (In fact she is widely recognized as Colorado’s resident expert in all things immigration.) In 2006, when it was reported that counties across the state were denying child welfare services to undocumented children and that abused/neglected/abandoned children were being returned to their country of origin without notice and a hearing, Nancy worked closely with the Colorado Lawyers Committee’s Children’s Task Force to explore the truth of the reports. Similarly, in 2009, when the Homeless ID Task Force agreed to assist individuals in obtaining IDs, Nancy stepped forward to represent an individual whose request for a state-issued ID was complicated by his immigration history, and ended up spending over 200 hours on the case. More recently, the clients who attend Denver Legal Night have been the beneficiaries of Nancy’s considerable immigration expertise. She has been a frequent volunteer at Legal Night and has also played an important role in assuring the participation of other immigration lawyers.

Nancy epitomizes the very best of the Colorado Lawyers Committee. Over the past 25 years, Nancy’s quiet leadership and extraordinary expertise have been essential to the Lawyers Committee’s capacity to make a difference. Nancy cares deeply about the populations we serve and is always willing to offer her considerable talents to make a difference in the lives of those who are less fortunate. The Colorado Lawyers Committee is sincerely grateful to Nancy for her many contributions.

We are proud to honor Nancy Elkind with the Outstanding Sustained Contribution Award.
