Palmer Polaski Partner Nancy Elkind Quoted in the Denver Business Journal Regarding Deferred Action Policy Announcement

Denver, Colorado, June 22nd – Palmer Polaski partner Nancy Elkind was cited in the Denver Business Journal article today discussing the Obama Administration’s announcement earlier this month that it would consider applications for “deferred action” for certain undocumented young people.  The announcement came when thousands of immigration attorneys, including the Palmer Polaski partners, were attending the annual conference of the American Immigration Lawyers Association in Nashville, Tennessee.  “Deferred action” is a long-standing administrative remedy used in situations where the likelihood of removal was small and where there were sympathetic factors present.  The requirements for deferred action under this policy directive include that the young person came to the United States under the age of 16; that s/he has resided continuously in the United States for at least five years prior to June 15, 2012; that s/he is currently in school, graduated from high school, obtained a GED certificate or are an honorably discharged veteran; and that s/he has not been convicted of a felony offense, a significant misdemeanor offenses, multiple misdemeanor offenses, or otherwise pose a threat to national security or public safety.  The Administration expects to publish additional guidance and filing instructions within the next 60 days.  For more information about the deferred action policy, go to www.uscis.gov or follow Palmer Polaski on FaceBook and/or Twitter.  To read the article in the Denver Business Journal, go to:  http://www.bizjournals.com/denver/print-edition/2012/06/22/employers-attorneys-ponder-order.html
